Since childhood I was curious about Yoga. School friends of mine who visited temples intrigued me. The way they worshipped and lived their lives with less conflict, meditating and finding their own inner peace and searching for meaning. How Yoga came into my life? Like any other religion I found that in that time Yoga was just another path, a new beginning and new life. When I was growing up I did more research into Buddhism and discovered that like Buddhism, yoga is a way of life. Life we live in to live, love and laugh. Yoga and Buddhism are sister traditions which evolved in the same spiritual culture of ancient India. They use many of the same terms and follow many of the same principles and practices. For this reason it is not surprising that many of us born in the West, particularly after an initial exposure, are apt to regard Yoga and Buddhist teachings as almost identical. Being born into a Muslim family, at times I found it hard to believe things which I had been taught. I realised that to answer my questions about faith I had to find my own inner peace and what I was searching for. My own destiny. This was to show and help people through a yoga where there are no boundaries, no division – we live this life to live in and believe in one self.
Growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, I practiced ballet and found my flexibility was really good and I was still curious about Yoga – still learning more about what its principles. I was interested in sports and weight training at a young age, and this took its toll on my body as I slipped a disc in my lower back. Being young, foolish and irresponsible with training it was quite a serious injury, the pain was really severe. I was told that there was evidence of severe nerve compression to which I would probably need surgery, but I received some Physiotherapy and was introduced to Pilates and Yoga to strengthen my back. Attending both Yoga and Pilates, I just fell in love instantly with them both, I studied more and more about the history and the concept of both Pilates principles and Yoga which means to Yoke, to concentrate on yourself, many principles and explanation of what Yoga really was, but with my mind set on helping others what I have been through and how I helped myself to be a better person, strong in my mind, body and soul, I had a mission and a goal set that I will help others.
I was open and accessible, I meant no disrespect for yoga traditions and their spiritual components, I was just not into imposing dogma. Happily forgoing Sanskrit and chanting hasn’t always endeared my way of yoga teaching but that’s never been my goal. I want to change the minds of everyday people about yoga. I want to make yoga accessible to the masses, not just the chosen few. Create a yoga where anyone could join in whether it’s a beginner, intermediate, Advanced, or even men, who always think Yoga is a ladies’ workout. I created something for everybody where there is No chanting, No Panting, No Sanskrit and No OM. My work was done, I created a Yoga Called WASU – Will And Strength Unite, which was for everyone, where everything work simultaneously, working on mind, body, soul, breath, core, will power, strength, Power, all worked as One, just like what yoga is meant to be, being One. Why Wasu? A shortened form of my name which in Arabic translates as big – my great-grandmother always called me Wasu and interpreted it as ‘big-hearted’. Wasu to me is about sharing with others my Will, My Strengths and I unite them all with one whole balance of self being.
Wasu was born, its primary purpose to help others, being their own Guru and teacher, getting to know who they are, and what they are capable of achieving, not only in life but in themselves, with inner strength, inner warrior, and inner peace.
